Strabismus

Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes, where one looks at a point while the other turns away. It occurs in both children and adults and comes in different types and degrees that require careful examination before treatment is decided. In children particularly, early assessment carries added importance because strabismus can be linked to weaker visual development in the turning eye.

How it works

1. 1 Full examination to measure the type and degree, and assess sight in each eye
2. 2 Investigation of related causes, such as uncorrected refractive errors
3. 3 A treatment plan that may involve glasses, exercises or surgery
4. 4 Periodic follow-up to assess response and adjust the plan

Recovery

Recovery depends on the treatment chosen: some cases are managed with glasses and monitoring without surgery, while others need a surgical procedure followed by a period of follow-up. Your doctor will explain the plan, appointments and precautions in detail, for you or for your child.
