PRK / surface ablation

PRK, or surface ablation, is one of the oldest laser vision-correction techniques and remains a valid option today. The laser works directly on the corneal surface after the thin outer layer covering it is removed, without creating a flap as in LASIK. The eye rebuilds that outer layer over the days following the procedure.

How it works

  1. 1 Full examination with corneal thickness measurement and mapping
  2. 2 Anaesthetic drops only
  3. 3 The thin outer layer is removed from the corneal surface
  4. 4 The surface is reshaped with the excimer laser and a protective lens applied

Recovery

The outer layer needs several days to grow back, so the early recovery period is longer than with LASIK and requires close adherence to drops and follow-up. Vision settles gradually; your doctor will explain what to expect in your case and when you can return to your activities.
